It’s officially party season and whether you’re throwing a blowout bash or keeping things more lowkey with a few friends, it’s the perfect time to unleash your inner DJ and host a lively soiree with great music. Here are a few essential things to keep in mind from Kimpton’s resident music guru, Lauren Bucherie.
- Know Your Crowd: The number one rule is knowing your audience. The goal is to share music that everyone will enjoy. If you have guests of all ages, mix in some oldies with current hits. If you’re drawing a blank, opt for the classic hits your group will know all the words to.
- Cultivate a Vibe: Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or a dancing disco, identifying the desired vibe is a must. For a relaxed atmosphere where your guests can chat over cocktails and bites, mix in jazz or acoustic versions of modern tunes. To get people on the dance floor, add in some chart busters from an era that would be most popular with your guests.
- Hit After Hit: Nothing gets the crowd going like those classic hits or familiar melodies that people love to sing and dance to–don’t shy away from these. Variety is great, especially when it comes to music choices, just be sure not to play too many different genres at the same time.
- Sound Check: Older recordings often have a softer sound than newly produced and mastered tracks, so selecting the option to “equalize” your playlist under volume controls will help you have a consistent, even level throughout. This option can be found under the advanced speaker settings on most sound systems, laptops and even smartphones.
