August 26 is National Dog Day … have you hugged your pooch today?

Well, if you’re a dog owner, you’ve probably lavished plenty of attention on your four-legged friend today. Like you do every other day. But this 10th annual celebration, founded by pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige, wants to do more than just salute your dog. National Dog Day wants to honor those working animals — like seeing-eye dogs, K-9 police animals, and search-and-rescue dogs — that make all our lives better and safer.

And along with giving a shout-out to those animals that earn their keep every day, National Dog Day wants to appeal to all those who are thinking about adding a new canine family member to consider adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue organization.

Adopting a dog is a big responsibility, so if you don’t have room in your life right now for an animal, a $5 donation to your local shelter in honor of National Dog Day can go a long way in comforting some critters. And you don’t even have to douse yourself with a bucket of puppy chow.

We at Kimpton are big dog lovers … and small dog lovers, and lovers of all kinds of pets. You never have to leave yours behind when you stay with us, no matter the breed or the size. Dogs, cats, birds, lizards, hamsters, whatever … they stay with you for free. And they get the same level of attention as their human sidekicks, with special treats, comfy pet beds, and hot tips on the best local dog runs or where to get that one-of-a-kind squeak toy.

And since National Dog Day salutes working dogs, we should mention we have a few of our own. Our Directors of Pet Relations greet guests, quality test our pet amenities, and generally add awesome levels of cuteness to the hotels where they work.
