It’s sniffle-y, sneeze-y season. Right, allergy sufferers? Luckily, we have more to offer you than just a hearty “Gesundheit.”
Hotel Monaco Portland has turned 25 guestrooms – that’s an entire floor – into an allergy-free zone. The new hypoallergenic floor was designed so you can eat better, sleep more soundly, and have an all-around more restful stay.
We start by cleaning these rooms with special HEPA filter vacuums (they trap fine particles like pollen and dust mites), and Green Seal-approved fragrance-free and chemical-free cleaning products. Beds have synthetic comforters and pillows, and hypoallergenic soaps, lotions, and shampoos are available by request.

Hungry? Crack open the mini bar to graze wheat- and gluten-free items. The room service menu is also gluten free.

Are the floors still carpeted in the hypo-allergenic rooms? Are the rooms tested for mold?
We do still have carpet in these rooms, Jenn, and we don’t test for mold beyond building requirements. What sets our hypoallergenic rooms apart is they’re feather free and all offer Down alternative for pillows and blankets. We use certified non-toxic, fragrance-free, biodegradable and organic cleaning products. The linens are laundered with non-toxic products free of petrochemicals and chlorine bleach. These rooms are also pet-free and smoke-free.
