A Charming Frontier Town with German Roots
Exploring Fredericksburg — a town radiating German-Texan heritage — is a unique travel experience as charming as they come. Established in 1846 by German immigrants, the town’s roots are evident in the historic buildings lining its “Hauptstrasse,” otherwise known as its Main Street.
One can’t-miss edifice is the Vereins Kirche, located in the town’s center. It served for many years as a church, but is now a museum and the most iconic landmark in Fredericksburg. A few blocks away, the Pioneer Museum keeps the spirit of the town’s early European settlers alive. Nestled in the Historic West Main Shopping District, this museum is a time capsule of ten historic buildings filled with cool relics from the German immigrants’ journey to Texas. Whether you’re a history buff or just here for the schnitzel, Fredericksburg is a small town with a big story to tell.

- Visit wineries and vineyards across the county. Over 30 wine tour companies offer tours and shuttles, with half-day, full-day, and private options.
- Hop on the 290 Wine Shuttle in downtown Fredericksburg and head out to several set wineries throughout the county on your own time. Two great stops include Jenschke Cellars and Blumenthal Farms.
- Forge the Urban Wine Trail by popping into a few of the ten tasting rooms downtown. Follow the map to favorites like Elk Store Winery, Six Twists, and Serrano Wine. If you haven’t finished your glass before your group is ready to head on to the next stop, fret not. You can take your wine to-go as you stroll.

Head to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a stunning designated wilderness area with a pink granite dome rising 425 feet above beautiful Texas Hill Country where visitors enjoy sweeping and totally breathtaking views as they ascend. If you’re the adventure-seeking type, climbing to the top of Enchanted Rock presents a big panoramic payoff — the climb typically takes about two hours.

The area’s designation as a “dark sky” location also makes it an incredible place to observe the night sky. Because of its geological significance, the area is known as a land of legends — fascinatingly, the rock has been known to creak and groan as it cools and heats up throughout the year. The Lipan Apache, the native people of the area, believed that the dome was haunted by spirits.

- Mountain Biking — enjoy one of many picturesque routes in the county, like the intermediate MTB Loop at Pedernales State Park or Ranch Road 1, which winds through Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park (including a fun, optional stop at late President Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson’s ranch). Bike rentals are a breeze at Ranch Road One Bike Rentals and Tours in nearby Stonewall, Texas.
- Bird Watching — pick up some binoculars and head to Live Oak Wilderness Nature Trail at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park for some of the best birding in the region. Over 300 species of birds call Texas Hill Country home, and the activity is a joy all year round. A few endangered species to watch out for include the Black-Capped Vireos and the Golden-Cheeked Warbler.
- Horseback Riding — several companies offer trail rides for horseback riders of all skill levels. Bit and Bridle Stables offer private, guided, two-hour tours through picture-perfect flowering meadows and winding trails.
- Golf at beautiful courses like Lady Bird Golf Course (a municipal course) and Boot Ranch.
