NOLA Bar None: Cool Cocktail, Wine and Coffee Bars

Eat + Drink Travel Tips

Kimpton Hotel Fontenot

Wine, spirits, coffee and booze-infused desserts are definitely not the official four food groups, but their dietary necessity should never be questioned. What would life be like without the smiles they inspire? Especially in an always-celebrating city like New Orleans, where we just opened the doors to a new Kimpton hotel just steps away from the French Quarter.

As we look forward to welcoming you to Kimpton Hotel Fontenot, we’ve already discovered some amazing oases to drop-kick your cares and treat your sweet tooth. (Spoiler alert: one of them is directly under our roof.)

Join us on a brief tour de indulgence…

A Spirited Approach

That Compère Lapin is named for a mischievous rabbit in Caribbean folklore gives you an idea of the playfulness that goes into every meal and every drink. The cocktail menu alone is seven pages, showcasing cheeky frozen drinks like the Who Dat-Quiri plus 34 types of rum, including three from the chef’s home island of St. Lucia. If you’re in the mood for brown liquor, the rustically relaxed Barrel Proof is known for its whiskeys—over 300 at last count. This self-proclaimed “clean dive bar” also makes one of the best margaritas in town.

Inside the new Kimpton Hotel Fontenot you’ll find Gospel Coffee and Boozy Treats. Here you’ll be tempted by expertly crafted espresso drinks, pour-overs and frozen custards, plus spirit-laden desserts and shakes. Try the Holy Atole, Gospel’s take on a frozen Mexican hot cocoa with mezcal, or sink your teeth into triple-bourbon brownies and cardamom-mezcal churros.

Wine and Unwind

If chic-meets-carefree is your kind of vibe, Oak Wine Bar serves it up, along with an ever-changing collection of some 100 wines focused on palate rather than region. Clink glasses at the cozy Second Vine Wine, where you can sink into big cozy couches or enjoy the al fresco courtyard. For those into natural wines, Saint-Germain Wine Bar serves vintages with few to no added sulfites, and a decided preference for organically or bio-dynamically produced wines. If you have a chance, slip over to the Bywater neighborhood to Bachhanal Fine Wine & Spirits for Old World-style wines and a “backyard party” ambience.

Jumpin’ Java Joints

After an evening of imbibing, the next morning may require an extra jump start. Never fear, New Orleans has you covered. French Truck has multiple locations, including a new one on Poydras Street, and are on a mission to serve small-batch coffee like Peru Gilmer Mejia with tasting notes of toffee, honey and cranberry. We love Cherry Espresso Bar for their weekly rotating roasters and house-made chai. Coffee and ice cream are a dynamic duo at Drip Affogato Bar, featuring blissful blends like The Classique, where vanilla ice cream is crowned with pistachios, sea salt, stroopwafel and an espresso drip.

We can’t wait to discover more of the Crescent City’s luscious offerings. Perhaps you can join us soon at the intersection of Poydras and Tchoupitoulas (chop-uh-TOO-lus) Streets, where the Kimpton Hotel Fontenot is ready to welcome you with the authentic NOLA greeting, “Where y’at?”
