Talk about your San Francisco treats.

Scala’s Bistro, one of Union Square’s prime gathering spots for nearly 20 years, is offering a pair of Italian cooking classes, led by Executive Chef Larry Finn and Pastry Chef Kimberly Bugler. You’ll learn fundamental kitchen skills while creating a delicious seasonal menu at these hands-on cooking classes, scheduled Saturday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Nov. 1. Each daylong class starts with a continental breakfast and ends with an elegant lunch expertly prepared by you and your fellow students.

It’s a great opportunity to up your cooking game, under the watchful eye of Chef Finn, who is a veteran of the acclaimed Morimoto in New York City, and Chef Bugler, who brings 20 years of experience to the pastry pantry. And despite Kimberly’s past experience with international pastry competitions (in which she’s done quite well … hello, silver medal), these are relaxed and fun classes. There will be no mystery box challenge, you will not be cursed at, or told to remove your apron and leave the kitchen if you make a misstep.

The menu for the August class includes heirloom tomato salad, lamb chop with vegetable tart, and apricot sorbet with basil ice cream and pavlova (and if you don’t know what pavlova is, all the better!). Naturally, there will be wine pourings, along with an in-depth discussion about the whys and wherefores of the different wine pairings for your meal.

The November lineup features mushroom crostini, grilled Llano Seco pork loin and crispy belly with house-cured sauerkraut and grain-mustard sauce, and Bartlett pear tarte Tatin with Riesling sabayon. Then enjoy a discussion about pairing food with beer, with each dish accompanied by a different brew.

These San Francisco cooking classes are limited to just 12 people each and cost $150, which includes continental breakfast, lunch and pairings. And a portion of the proceeds goes to the SF–Marin Food Bank. Register for the August class right here, and the November class here.

Bon appétit.

Wow – this is awesome! Definitely signing up and bringing friends… I brought my brother and girlfriend to Scala’s Bistro for Kimpton Restaurant Month last year, and every single dish we had was amazing.

Any classes in SF Feb 24-28th, 2016?

    • Larry Finn says:

Cheryl, thank you for your interest in the cooking classes at Scala’s! Unfortunately, there are no classes scheduled for February. We will be finalizing our 2016 schedule in the next week or so. We just have to finish a few details. Once we do I will let you know.
