These are Some of the Prettiest College Campuses in the World

Destinations

Up for a campus stroll? For generations, college and university campuses have served as more than educational institutions — they’re also havens of beauty, history, and architectural marvels.

Across the globe, several campuses stand out for their gorgeous gardens, striking views, and remarkable buildings. These institutions are destinations in their own right, worthy of a trip to spend time simply admiring them.

We’ve rounded up some of the most striking university campuses in the world — and we promise you don’t have to be a student to enjoy the views.

Edinburgh, Scotland: The University of Edinburgh

Historic is an understatement when it comes to The University of Edinburgh. Established on April 14, 1582, the campus is full of stunning architectural beauty from the Old College to the New College, both designed by William Henry Playfair.

Don’t miss Moray House, home to the school of education — it’s one of the few remaining aristocratic houses from the 16th century in the area. Magnificent McEwan Hall is home to graduation ceremonies, flagship lectures, and concerts, and its interior is topped with a massive, domed ceiling with murals painted in the Italian Renaissance style that represent various aspects of the arts and sciences.

The grounds at the University of Edinburgh feature lush greenery and elegant courtyards and is the type of place students, faculty, and visitors alike could wander for hours.

Nashville, Tennessee: Vanderbilt University

The campus of Vanderbilt University combines both modern and historic architecture in Gothic and Victorian styles, lined along serene lawns perfect for lounging. In fact, you’ll often see students setting up picnic blankets and lawn games in between classes.

Kirkland Hall, built in 1874, has a striking clock tower that can be seen from miles away. The campus has dozens of walking trails, shaded by what feels like a tunnel of trees, and several dedicated gardens with seating.

Spend time on these trails, and you might just forget that you’re in the middle of buzzing Midtown Nashville, within walking distance of Broadway, Music City’s main tourist drag.

The university’s Arnold Arboretum, with over 2,000 species of plants, is a favorite among visitors, locals, and students alike.

The university is renowned for its Georgian-style architecture, which was one of the most popular styles during the colonial period of the United States. You’ll notice iconic red brick buildings, ornate terraces and carvings, and attractive facades lining the streets.

The university takes pride in meticulously maintaining the lawns and gardens, while featuring seasonal flora — don’t miss the tulips in the Spring. Simply ambling down the cobblestone pathways and soaking in the atmosphere is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Charlottesville, Virginia: The University of Virginia

The University of Virginia is picture-perfect. With buildings dating back to 1817, the 1,135-acre central campus is comprised of 8 schools, most housed in neoclassical-style buildings with eye-catching motifs and satisfyingly symmetrical layouts.

The Rotunda at UVA, completed in 1826, was designed by Thomas Jefferson as the architectural heart of the University. Unlike other buildings of its time, the Rotunda was built around a library instead of a church, and many believe that this represents Jefferson’s belief in the separation of church and education.

A large, lush, grassy lawn connects many of the buildings on campus — it’s almost too perfect not to lounge on during a sunny afternoon.
