These are the Best Winery Day Trips from San Francisco

Destinations

When you’re staying in San Francisco, a wine country escape might seem out of reach — but some of California’s most celebrated vineyards are just a scenic drive away. In under 75 minutes, you can trade the city’s steep streets for sprawling greenery, sun-drenched terraces, and beautifully designed wineries that invite you to slow down and take a breath.

From intimate vineyard hideaways to architectural marvels, each of the wineries below offers a distinct slice of California’s wine country magic — some offer a five-course wine and food extravaganza, while others include a two-hour tasting with an art walk.

Whichever experience calls to you, be sure to book ahead — these elevated tastings often require advance reservations. And trust us, they’re worth every sip.

Ram’s Gate Winery 55 minutes, Sonoma

Positioned amidst the dramatic vistas of Sonoma Valley and 28 acres of organically farmed vines including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, and Grenache, you’ll find it hard to believe you’re only 34 miles from the concrete jungle.

The diversity of wine styles opens the door to a wide range of tasting experiences, but day-trippers should consider the two hour, five-course Seasonal Wine & Food Experience, to use their time wisely. The menu, helmed by executive chef Ruby Oliveros, is ever-changing but always satisfying with past pairings like uni and caviar pasta (served with their Diablo Chardonnay) and jackfruit beet rangoons (paired with their Richards Vineyard Syrah).

Keller Estate — 60 minutes, Petaluma

Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, the Petaluma Gap is an American Viticultural Area that is finally getting its due — thanks in part to wineries like Keller Estate, which are shining a spotlight on the region’s distinctive character. Known for its cool-climate influence and persistent coastal winds, this underrated region delivers fresh expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as unexpectedly bold Syrah and terroir-driven styles of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

Day trippers will appreciate the atmospheric patio overlooking the coastal mountains where they can opt for a 1-2 hour estate tour (through the vineyards and the estate’s barrel cave) that concludes with a flight of five to six samples.

The Donum Estate — 65 minutes, Sonoma

Tucked into Carneros, on the border of Napa and Sonoma, The Donum Estate delights with their single-vineyard, single-appellation, and limited-production Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They are also renowned for their collection of 60 sculptures carefully placed throughout the 200-acre property, including Fernando Botero’s Hombre Caminante, Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin, and Richard Hudson’s Love Me.

The best opportunity to savor both wine and art is through the vinyard’s two-hour Explore Experience, which is an immersive, private tour of the land via an all-terrain vehicle that culminates with a tasting of seasonal estate wines and chef-prepared small plates.

Cuvaison Winery 60 minutes, Napa

As if the sweeping 400-acre Tai Vineyard at Cuvaison Winery weren’t picturesque enough, the estate elevated its tasting experience last summer with the debut of two open-air boathouse pavilions, gracefully cantilevered over a secluded pond at the heart of the property.

Designed by architect Douglas Thornley, the pavilions are reserved for The Boathouse Tasting Experience: A two-hour journey that begins with a stroll through the vineyard and cellar before a sampling of six of Cuvaison’s estate red and white wines paired with seasonal nibbles. If you can’t snag one of the coveted boathouses, the Winemaker’s Tasting Experience set on the new, 2,500-square-foot Vineyard Patio is a stunning alternative.

Domaine Chandon California 70 minutes, Yountville

The recently renovated Domaine Chandon California features oak-ensconced platforms fitted with rosy hued loungers and golden garden cabanas that encourage guests to linger for hours — in true European fashion.

Both the Terroirs Tasting and Mavericks Tasting present the best opportunity to make your way through an array of Chandon’s portfolio of sparkling wines, but for a truly unique and private group experience, reserve the Garden Cabanas where the house pairs magnums like Chandon Brut Rosé and Red Demi Sec with a curated feast of local dishes.

Don’t forget — make sure to designate a driver prior to the start of the festivities. Or, better yet, hire a driver for the day trip. If a private driver is out of the budget, dial up a Lyft or an Uber to enjoy your outing to the fullest as ride shares are more readily available than ever.
