’Tis the Season to Warm Up With Winter Cocktails

Eat + Drink

It’s that time of year again — when the days get shorter, the sunsets turn richer, and suddenly that crisp gin and tonic gives way to something a bit warmer, deeper, and more comforting. Maybe it’s the chill in the air, maybe it’s a seasonal sore throat, or maybe you’re simply looking for a little evening ritual to keep the cold at bay. And if the latest polar vortex has you housebound, a well-made cocktail can be just the thing to shake off a bout of cabin fever.

While most people reach for something piping hot, one of the ultimate winter cocktails is actually a chilled classic: The Old Fashioned. It’s beautifully simple — a couple ounces of bourbon or rye, a few dashes of Angostura bitters, an orange peel, and either a touch of simple syrup or a sugar cube. Muddle to dissolve the sugar and release those citrus oils, stir with ice, pour into a rocks glass, and crown it with a cherry. Then settle into a cozy seat by the fire and let the evening slow down.

Instead of rattling off a long list of cold-weather sips, here are three standout winter cocktails that offer everything from spice and warmth to smooth, spirit-forward comfort. Consider this your invitation to pour, mix, sip, and savor the season.

Winter Cocktail #1: The Heated Affair

The Heated Affair is winter warmth in a glass — a soothing blend of añejo tequila and hot, spiced apple cider that feels like wrapping up in your favorite blanket after a long, cold day. Start by warming your glass so the drink stays toasty, then pour in rich tequila and fragrant cider infused with cloves, cinnamon, allspice, and orange peel.

A float of heavy cream adds a luxurious, velvety layer that softens the spice and creates a beautiful contrast. Finish with a dusting of freshly grated nutmeg and sip slowly as the flavors meld into something comforting, aromatic, and just a little bit decadent — the perfect antidote to winter’s chill.

The Heated Affair

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Partida Añejo Tequila
  • 6 oz Hot-Spiced Apple Cider
Hot-Spiced Apple Cider: Apple juice, cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice, and orange peel
Top with heavy cream and grated nutmeg

Method

  1. Make the hot-spiced apple cider. In a pot, mix the apple juice, cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice, and orange peel.
  2. Bring to a boil at low heat for about 15 minutes and then taste for flavor. When the desired flavor is reached, take it off the stove.
  3. Strain out the spices and orange peel.
  4. Next, warm a small wine glass with hot water, then toss the water and add the tequila and hot apple cider. Stir.
  5. Float the heavy cream over the mixture.
  6. Garnish fresh grated nutmeg over the heavy cream.

Winter Cocktail #2: The Kyoto Winter Warmer

The Kyoto Winter Warmer is a beautifully subtle, aromatic take on a hot winter cocktail, built around the delicate depth of Japanese whisky. The drink begins by gently crushing a clove and a strip of Meyer lemon peel to release their bright, spicy oils, then steeping them with hot water and whisky for a soothing, fragrant infusion.

Warm your glass beforehand so every sip stays cozy, then strain in the mixture and finish with a few drops of cacao tincture. The result is a refined, quietly luxurious warm cocktail — citrusy, lightly spiced, and kissed with chocolate — perfect for crisp evenings when you want something comforting yet elegant.

  • 1 Clove

  2. While this is steeping, add some hot water to a snifter or a small Belgian beer glass.
  3. Once the glass is warm, discard the water and pour the hot cocktail mix into the glass.
  4. Garnish with four drops of cacao tincture.

Winter Cocktail #3: The Winter Night

TheWinter Night is the kind of cocktail that feels like settling into a deep armchair by the fire — rich, comforting, and effortlessly elegant. Cognac and aged tawny port create a warm, velvety base, and their fruity, caramel notes blend beautifully with a touch of maple syrup and a dash of Angostura bitters. Add hot water to open up the aromatics, then pour everything into a preheated snifter so the drink stays luxuriously warm.

A sprinkle of grated cinnamon on top brings the whole experience together with a soft, spicy finish. It’s the perfect nightcap for when the world outside is cold and quiet.

As the temperatures dip and the evenings stretch a little longer, these cocktails offer a delicious way to embrace the season rather than hide from it. Whether you’re cozying up by the fire, hosting friends for a festive night in, or simply crafting a moment of calm after a long day, each drink brings its own kind of winter magic — from spiced and soothing to rich and indulgent.

So, gather your ingredients, warm your favorite glass, and toast to the small comforts that make the coldest months feel a little brighter. Cheers to staying warm, staying creative, and sipping well all winter long.
