Charlotte may be a hub for banking and big-league sports, but the city’s true charm lies in its balance of Southern sophistication and a laid-back, outdoor-loving spirit. Known as Queen City, it surprises visitors with an outdoorsy side that’s as refreshing as it is relaxing. One of its best-kept secrets? Charlotte enjoys around 218 days of sunshine each year — plenty of time to soak up those famous Carolina blue skies.

Whether you’re lacing up for a morning run, spreading out a picnic blanket, or strolling with Fido, the city’s green spaces make it easy to slow down and savor the sunshine. Uptown alone is home to an impressive collection of urban parks, each one a little oasis in the middle of the bustle.
From sculpture-dotted lawns to tree-shaded paths, here are our four favorite uptown parks, all just a short walk from your stylish home base at Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel.
Romare Bearden Park: Church & Third
Named for Charlotte-born artist Romare Bearden, this park’s whimsical design was inspired by his collages and paintings. Stroll through the two formal gardens or make some music by tapping the interactive chimes.

With a large grass field, a formal courtyard, and a stunning waterfall, the 5.4-acre park is the best place to relax on the grass before crossing the street to catch a Knights game at Truist Field. Plus, from summer through early fall, the park regularly hosts live concerts — from mellow workday lunch jams to evening jazz — almost every day of the week.
The Green: Levine Avenue of the Arts between South Tryon Street & College
This 1-acre interactive pocket park borders the Levine Center for the Arts, a cultural hub that’s home to The Mint Museum, The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, The Knight Theater, and The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture. A green oasis in the middle of Second Ward, The Green has a literary theme, with quotes from famous writers and signs pointing to locations named for various authors.

Restaurants and shops line both sides of the narrow, shaded park, but it’s easy to forget you’re in the middle of a busy city while you admire the fountains and sculptures and listen to motion-activated sounds of water falling and bees buzzing.
First Ward Park: Seventh & Brevard
First Ward Park is the newest park on this list as it was completed in 2015. The 4-acre park sits across from the city’s quirky children’s library, ImaginOn, and the beloved local 7th Street Public Market, Charlotte’s thriving indoor market. On the far side, an amphitheater and fountain serve as lively anchors for the park — especially on summer Friday evenings, when free concerts draw the crowds. Add in lawn games, food trucks, and local breweries, and you’ve got one of Uptown’s best places to kick off the weekend. Even better? The park doubles as a convenient jumping-off point for catching the light rail southbound.
Frazier Park: 1201 West Fourth Street
Visit Frazier Park when you’re ready to do some exploring. The pretty, shaded 16.5-acre space includes creekside greenway trails, a playground, and plenty of the huge old trees Charlotte is known for.

When Fido is along for the adventure, Frazier Park is your go-to destination. Start with a jog or leisurely stroll along the scenic greenway, where you and your pup can stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh Carolina air. Afterwards, head over to the spacious 1.3-acre dog park, a tail-wagging paradise where four-legged friends can run, romp, and make new playmates while you mingle with fellow pet lovers.
