Miami’s South Beach neighborhood is world famous for nightlife that pulses into the wee hours. But what happens when the thumping tunes fade and the sun rises?
In a word, Daylife — a term adopted by Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel, a laid-back haven in the heart of South Beach. “It’s all about getting outside and enjoying the beautiful natural environment,” says Jay Jiggins, Kimpton Surfcomber’s official Director of Daylife. Jay curates guest programming for the hotel, and she’s happy to share a few of the most popular daytime activities in SoBe, also nicknamed the “American Riviera.”
Wellness by Land and Sea
The happy people you see here are testement to a culture of wellness, and fitness options are endless. If running is your thing, you can log miles on hard-packed sand or wide boardwalks — both with stunning views and ocean breezes. There are also groups who meet regularly to do bootcamp workouts together.
Although SoBe is very walkable, you’ll cover more ground on wheels. Cycle or skate to the famous Art Deco District, the museum and park district, Versace’s former mansion, the outdoor Lincoln Road Mall and other unique destinations. Our friends at Bike & Roll Miami offer guided tours and tandem bikes for couples, while Surfcomber lets you borrow a PUBLIC European-style cruiser, compliments of the house.
We all know the health benefits of yoga. Throw in the element of water and now you’re upping the ante on concentration, balance and core strength. Sign up for a SUP-yoga class, where you’re guided through aquatic asanas on a standup paddle board. For a more grounded experience, beach yoga classes are also popular. Surfcomber guests are treated to an in-house wellness program, complete with yoga, bootcamp and other fitness classes on site.
Aquatic Adventures
With perfect ocean temperatures, the lure of azure waters is too much to resist. From snorkeling and scuba diving to paddle-boarding and kayaking to deep-sea fishing and dining cruises, South Beach and the surrounding area offer all the maritime excitement.
If you’re feeling daring, give your inner Bear Grylls the ride of a lifetime with a private or dual kite surfing lesson. This extreme sport is an athletic mix of windsurfing, paragliding, snowboarding and gymnastics.
Unwind Poolside
Whether it’s a glimmering soiree or a more casual gathering, South Beach pool parties can’t be missed. Surfcomber’s version involves standout signature cocktails and tapas, not to mention cabanas and a refreshingly chill take on the pool party scene. Other prime spots for daytime imbibing include Miami’s Design District, the artsy Wynwood neighborhood or overlook Biscayne Bay at the Pérez Art Museum.
Family Fun
Daylife activities abound for little ones. Build an epic sandcastle on the beach, or fly a kite into the ocean breeze. Crandon Park on Key Biscayne is an ideal spot to explore with kids, featuring a nature center, self-guided trails and a mangrove boardwalk to a fossilized reef overlook. Swim with dolphins at Miami Seaquarium, where you can also don a dive helmet and “walk” through a 300,000-gallon tropical reef.
All of these sun-filled options can be found at or arranged by Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel. Jay thoughtfully plans a full calendar of Daylife activities — sandcastle building, water gun tag, aqua aerobics, kids cooking classes and more — all centered around the hotel’s sparkling beachfront pool, outdoor bar and private sandy back yard just steps from the ocean.
