With the holidays getting underway, Bosco knows more and more pets will be hitting the road. Take it from him: Traveling with dogs around isn’t always, well … a walk in the park. So Bosco came up with tips to make travels go more smoothly for those with animals in tow. (Full disclosure: Bosco, as smart as he is, got help writing these tips from FireSky’s General Manager Jim Hollister.)

Before You Go:
• Take your pet to the vet to make sure he’s road ready. Don’t forget to ask for a printout that shows your pet is current with vaccines.
• Make sure your pup’s collar info reflects your current telephone number.
• Stock up on the food and treats that he’s used to in order to avoid tummy troubles while away. (Vacation isn’t the time to change an animal’s diet.)
• Pack a current photograph of your pet in case he or she goes missing and you need to show people who you’re looking for.
• Ask your destination about its pet perks and policies so you can prepare accordingly. FireSky Resort and all other Kimpton hotels have water bowls and dog beds available.
In the Car:
• To avoid carsickness, don’t feed your pet right before you leave.
• Make sure your pet is on his leash before opening the car door to prevent a fast break.
• Like people, pets benefit from stopping every few hours to stretch their legs, so hit rest areas.
• Don’t leave your pet alone in the car.
• Fight the urge to let your furry friend stick his head out the window. It’s dangerous and can result in eye, ear, and head injuries. Instead, crack the window just enough so your pup can enjoy a little fresh air.
At the Hotel:
• Make sure water is accessible at all times to ensure your pet remains hydrated.
• Have appropriate over-the-counter medication handy in case unfamiliar territory and sounds cause your furry friend to become anxious.
• Have favorite toys and treats at the ready to entertain and reward your pet for good behavior.
Follow these guidelines and everyone – humans and canines included – will return from their trip rested and worry-free. Can’t bark at that.
