Holiday Hosting: 5 Tips to Create Party Magic

Celebrations Entertaining

The holiday season has a way of arriving before you know it, so it’s never too early to start planning. Whether you’re hosting a festive soirée at a hotel or restaurant — or simply in the comfort of your own home — the foundation to any great party begins with organizing the space and creating that magical holiday feel.

Hosting a holiday party this year? Here’s how to make it a successful one.

We’ve put together some creative, insider tips to help create a warm and inviting fête, whether it’s for an intimate few friends or a large gathering your guests won’t stop talking about for years to come.

Holiday Hosting Tip #1: A Cocktail Greeting

What better way to start the night off than by serving your favorite bubbly in a vintage coupe glass or a seasonal cocktail to your guests as they arrive? Picture it as a guest: You walk in and upon taking your coat off, are immediately greeted with a sparkly, seasonal beverage — holiday mode activated.

Holiday Hosting Tip #2: A Spirited Aroma

Add a whiff of holiday fragrance into the space with a classic holiday aroma like woodsy pine, balsam fir, or cinnamon with a soy-based candle. You can also use scented décor like a fresh sage wreath or a cinnamon broom.

Our sense of smell is a powerful one, which can instantly transport us to a specific time and place, enhancing the feel-good vibes that embody a festive get-together.

Holiday Hosting Tip #3: Pops of Color

Decorate with a seasonal nod to the holidays rather than a full-blown theme — we’re talking of snowmen and reindeer here — with a pop of color, like fresh white florals, pomegranate reds and purples, and deep green garlands.

Pop fresh white linens with bright pomegranate reds for that picturesque holiday feel.

An espresso martini is always a good idea.

Deep greens pair well with the simplicity of a fresh palette.

Also, metallic centerpieces complement traditional holiday colors and make for a stylish and design-inspired atmosphere.

Holiday Hosting Tip #4: Cozy Conversations

Steer away from the notion of being overly formal. Place clusters of oversized chairs surrounding small tables in different corners of the room so that guests can easily chat, set down their drinks, and have a moment alone, if needed.

While some people receive energy from telling stories to a group and meeting every person in the room, others recharge by simply having one meaningful conversation with a single person all evening (I’m referring to those of us who prefer to make friends with the cat) so it’s important to create a space that everyone will enjoy.

Holiday Hosting Tip #5: Lighting is Everything

Chances are, your party might start late in the afternoon, so use the natural light to your benefit. For a warmer evening glow, transition to amber votive holders, chic string lights, and tapered candles for instant ambiance.

Use lighting to your advantage, no matter the setting.

For an added effect, use a projector to screen a classic black and white holiday film once the sun goes down and the party is in full swing.
