How to Explore Atlanta’s Best Hidden Gems in 48 Hours

Destinations

Atlanta is a vibrant hub where urban landmarks meet sprawling green spaces, historic buildings are transformed into lively centers of culture, and a dynamic arts scene thrives on community involvement and local creatives.

Plus, Atlanta’s status as an international travel hub means you can easily catch multiple domestic flights while enjoying a compact layout that allows you to maximize your time without being stuck in traffic to and from the airport. In other words — you can do a lot in Atlanta with just 48 hours without being stuck in a car.

Ahead of your impromptu trip, we’ve curated a mix of expected (and unexpected) stops to make during your quick weekend getaway to Atlanta, an ever-changing city that you’ll want to visit again and again.

Tiny Doors ATL

For a quirky adventure, we recommend tracking down the Tiny Doors — whimsical, mouse-sized murals hidden throughout the city. You can use the Tiny Doors map to locate all 30 of these public installations, but our personal favorite is the second door along the Eastside BeltLine trail, which segues seamlessly into our next Atlanta must-see.

Atlanta Botanical Garden

Nature lovers will adore the Atlanta Botanical Garden, an urban oasis that blends art, nature, and architecture in a stunning showcase of rotating exhibits and permanent collections. One of its most breathtaking features is the Earth Goddess, a towering 25-foot living sculpture nestled in the Cascades Garden that feels like something straight from the vault of a Pixar film.

The Beltline

The Atlanta Beltline is a 22-mile loop of walking and biking trails that weaves through the city, connecting neighborhoods, local businesses, restaurants, art installations, and more. If you’ve experienced New York’s High Line, this is Atlanta’s version — a vibrant pathway that lets you explore the city on foot, perfect for tourists who don’t have access to a car.

Doll Head Trail

Okay, this one is particularly kooky, but The Doll’s Head Trail is a short hike that cuts through an abandoned 19th-century brick factory — and is scattered with discarded doll parts. If you’re looking for a little physical exertion amidst gorgeous greenery — but also some weirdness — this is the spot for you. The trail is the work of Joel Slaton, a local carpenter, who encourages visitors to leave behind their own found art.

Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park is another green space in the middle of urban Atlanta, with over 200 acres of grass that is perfect for picnics and unparalleled views of the impressive city skyline. Not only is this a serene retreat for residents and visitors alike, but it also hosts a variety of events throughout the year — like music festivals and farmer’s markets that you’ll definitely want to check out while you’re in town.

Ponce City Market

Atlanta has made significant strides in establishing itself as a vibrant cultural hub, a fact underscored by the multitude of films and television shows shot in the city each year. A prime example of this artistic commitment is Ponce City Market, which has transformed from a once-neglected Sears building into a lively food hall and retail destination.

Here, you’ll find a blend of well-known brands like Warby Parker alongside Souk Bō’hēmian, a marketplace celebrating local businesses and crafts. This revitalized space embodies Atlanta’s dedication to fostering creativity and community, and anyone looking for a well-done cocktail can head up to the rooftop for carnival games and libations.
