Off the Beaten Path in Philadelphia

Destinations

It’s true, Philadelphia has no shortage of well-traversed landmarks, iconic cheesesteak eateries, and world-famous art. It is, after all, one of the oldest — and most iconic — cities in the United States, beloved not only for its historical nature but for the people that have made it into the buzzing metropolis that it is today.

Keeping in the spirit of brotherly love, we are taking a look at some intriguing alternatives to the city’s most famed attractions — though, don’t sleep on those either.

Here’s what to explore on your next visit to Philadelphia.

If you like the Constitution Center — check out the Museum of the American Revolution

A short walk from the major tourist draws, this recently opened 16-room museum houses an impressive collection and offers a glimpse into the lesser-known history of the American Revolution.

Divided into four parts from 1760 to the present, uncover unusual objects like General Washington’s tent and a rare, engraved Philly powder horn.

If you like the Magic Gardens — check out the Mural Arts Walking Tour

For a visual feast, enjoy the colorful collection of over 50 new murals which appear yearly on various buildings. Take a self-guided tour around the largest cluster in Center City, known as “Mural Mile” and check out vibrant works like Meg Saligman’s Philadelphia Muses, made with parachute cloth that feature a cast of dancers, readers, and artists.

Dubbed “the world’s largest outdoor art gallery”, the Mural Arts walking tour is truly the beating heart of Philadelphia.

If you like the City Hall Tower & Observation Deck — check out Jean-Georges Philadelphia

Located within the Comcast Center — the tallest building in Philadelphia — and on the 59th floor, Jean-Georges offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the entire city through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Indulge in a Michelin-star worthy meal amidst the sparkling beauty of the city below, then head upstairs to Skyhigh — the crown jewel atop the city — for a variety of handcrafted, singular cocktails.

If you like the Philadelphia Museum of Art — check out the Barnes Foundation

Inside its modernist glass and limestone home, the world-renowned collection of pharmaceutical giant Dr. Albert C. Barnes showcases 19th and 20th-century French masterpieces. The collection includes countless, priceless pieces — 181 Renoirs, 69 Cézannes, and 59 Matisses (just to name a few). But who’s counting?

After you take in the art, stroll the four acres of brilliantly landscaped grounds.

If you like Pat’s or Geno’s Steaks — check out Monk’s Café

Dubbed “the soul of Belgium in the heart of Philadelphia” Monk’s is rumored to have the best vegetarian (yes, you read that right) classic cheesesteak sammie in the city.

Made with seitan, mushrooms, fried onion, and gruyere, the sandwich can also be made vegan by substituting the gruyere for vegan mozzarella. And the best part? The restaurant’s wide variety of European beers that just so happen to pair perfectly with a gooey cheesesteak.

If you like shopping Rittenhouse Row — check out North Third Street

For boutique shopping along sleepy, brick-lined streets, head to Philly’s charming Old City. Here, North Third Street is peppered with small, indie shops that are perfect for idle strolls. The cool girls head to Vagabond for cutting-edge labels like Ulla Johnson, chic homewares, and designer vintage.
